Twelve Men

Just 12 Men

Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to cast out evil spirits and to heal every kind of disease and illness. Here are the names of the twelve apostles: first Simon (also called Peter), then Andrew (Peter's brother), James (son of Zebedee), John (James's brother), Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew (the tax collector), James (son of Alphaeus), Thaddaeus, Simon (the Zealot), Judas Iscariot (who later betrayed him). Matthew 10:1-4

What an interesting and amazing group to choose if your goal is to forever change the world. Twelve men who, because of Jesus' life and resurrection and the power of the Spirit, forever changed the history of our planet. We have such a great temptation to offer honor to these men because of the good they did. While we must be grateful of those who were faithful and paid the ultimate price for their discipleship, we must also realize that the glory of their service is found in their Master.

What makes them special is that Jesus called them and gave them authority to do great works to bless others. I wonder what he wants to do with us? I wonder what role he wants us to play in his great work of redemption?

The Need for Workers

He said to his disciples, "The harvest is so great, but the workers are so few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send out more workers for his fields." Matthew 9:37-38

Dear Lord,

Please give me the heart to follow Jesus, the faith to expect his great works to be done through me. Allow me to give Him all the glory for what happens that is good. Thank you, Father, for your love and everlasting grace.

In Jesus' name I pray.
Amen.

In prayer it is better to have a heart without words than words without a heart. -John Bunyan

"Do you not say, 'Four months more and then the harvest'? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest." John 4:35 (NIV)

Just like Dennis quoted, "Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few." Matthew 9:37 (NIV)

We want to be "served", not to "serve". That's the attitude of the world today. Where is the "customer satisfaction" in the church? Where's the complaint department where I can inform them they aren't serving "me" well. That's why we, in the world today, have very few faithful workers for the Lord because they rather be "served" than "serve" others.

If we read Isaiah 6:8 when Isaiah saw the Lord and His angels in his vision, the Lord said, "Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?" Apparently, there's no one else around Isaiah that's willing to serve God but Isaiah. Isaiah said, "Here I am, send me!" with an exclamation point! He is willing. He is ready. He wants to serve the Lord.

We come to the Lord to serve Him and serve others.
